New Site Studio Contributor Is Released!

Its about time...

Oracle has finally released the much anticipated update to the Site Studio contributor. The old one used an ActiveX control, and only worked in IE. The new one has been in development for about three years now... and works on all browsers and platforms. Free update for 10gr3 users, so have at it!

Update: this contributor will eventually be released for Site Studio 7.7 and Content Server 7.5.1... they have a set of patches to enable it, they just need to finish the testing phase. Stay tuned!

The engineers did a pretty cool job of abstracting the editing layer from the data layer... so its easy to plug in whatever contributor you want. The released version uses the Java-based Ephox editor... but you could use a pure JavaScript one (like the FCKEditor) with a bit of effort... likewise, you could use Adobe Flex to create a desktop version of the contributor app, if one were so inclined...

I like the Ephox editor... it has a ton of cool new features, and I think everybody will be pleased with this change. My favorite feature is the styles drop-down: it shows you what the CSS styles look like in the name, and breaks them down into block- and inline-styles. That way, people unfamiliar with using styles to pick colors/fonts/sizes/etc, can use the preview as a guide. With a good web designer, that can give the site a highly polished look...

Oracle is hosting a web content management conference on April 16th. They should be demo-ing the new editor... so sign up if you'd like to see it in action.

Since browsing Oracle Metalink for patches is a baffling ordeal, Alan Baer kindly put together a table with the names of all the patches you'll need... You're required to install 3 or 4 patches, depending on which version of the content server you have:

10.1.3.3.2 10.1.3.3.1
Site Studio 10.1.3.3.3 (Build 225) 6907097 6907097
Content Server Update Bundle 6907073 6050990
Native Update Package 6899660 6899685
Content Access Update Package Not Required 6899823

fantastic! now, about the javascript "bit of effort"...

Does Ephox have a javascript (non-java) version? How do we switch to it?

I've heard you can use FCKEditor

and that eventually they will be releasing it as a 'sample' of how to plug in other WYSIWYG editors.

Ephox is probably the best editor -- for now -- but you might want a different one depending on your audience.

Dates?

Any hints as to when this will be released for 7.5/7.7?
I mentioned it to our content people and they are now harrasing me as to when!

Oracle doesn't give dates like Stellent did

I know its a tough culture shock for a lot of existing Stellent customers... but for multiple multiple so many legal reasons, Oracle doesn't give dates. I believe the official date is 'sometime in 2008'

Although if I had to guess... I'd be surprised if it was delayed past August.

Other than that, there's not much anyone can say.

JavaScript and Ephox

Yes we do, we have embedded fckeditor (which you probably know about) and disabled all the parts that are unstable or don't generate compliant code on all platforms and browsers. But: the java version is much better. For quick simple edits javascript works fine. If you are writing a more complex document java is the way to go. Tables, bullets, menus, etc all work much better in java and advanced features like image editing, track changes and the advanced styles controls we have are simply not available in javascript editors of any description. Once the editor has loaded for the first time in the browser reloads are very quick (our engineers did a lot of work in this area) and for rich documents or webpages with multiple content items the java version is faster than javascript.

If you are an Oracle/Stellent user this feature is available directly from us as it is not embedded in the integration of EditLive! that Stellent originally licensed from us.

Ephox here

Bex, thanks for the kind words. We look forward to hearing more feedback from users in the field. We have a new version of EditLive! due next week which adds some very cool CSS features that are usable by non html savvy people such as myself. Also, track chages is worth a look for making changes more visible during workflow or while collaborating on document copy.

I am the marketing director at Ephox.

And ... about the 'licensing'?

Anyone else get this message yet?

"Your 30 day trial period has expired. To purchase your license go to: http://www.ephox.com."

We LOVE this editor but couldn't find any mention in release notes, etc. about needing to license this separately???

contact Oracle

I had heard rumblings about some licensing issues... I'm not sure whether you get the license from Oracle, or from Ephox. Best contact your Oracle sales rep.

Ephox JavaScript/AJAX Editor

To visitor and mikeyc

See my earlier post. We have such an editor available for direct purchase from us.

Ephox runs very slow, contributor takes forever.

Any suggestions? can I disable something in the configuration for Ephox to make it run much faster? Contributor ran faster in 7.5.2.
